Master Bathroom Remodel
This master bathroom remodeling project was completed for a previous client that wanted a larger shower and updated vanity area. The new bathroom needed to lean towards contemporary and be more functional than what they currently had while staying within their modest budget.
Here’s a list of what we were able to do for our client:
- The clients never used their large soaking tub and hated the small unattractive shower in their master bathroom. So the new design included removing the tub all together and installing a large shower.
- The new shower design included many features that the client desired:
- The new shower included a tiled floor and walls in place of the out dated cultured marble.
- A “dry off” area was incorporated in the new shower design. The old layout mandated that the shower door be opened into the bathroom entry and that drying off after a shower would block entry into or out of the bathroom. This would also leave the floor wet in a natural traffic pattern that could cause a possible slip/safety hazard.
- Two benches were incorporated into the new shower space; a small corner seat in the shower and another in the “dry off” area.
- Clear glass shower panels were used to give an open feeling to the room as well as allow a good view of the beautiful shower tile work and plumbing fixtures.
- The shower valve was placed near the entrance so that it could be turned on without spraying the client with cold water. Now the client can turn on the water without getting into the shower and wet until the water is warm.
- Because this bathroom is located on the second floor of the client’s home there were challenges with reworking the drain and vent pipes within the existing floor trusses. This is actually why and how the bench seat in the “dry off” area came to fruition; a vent pipe had to be routed through the bench because of a girder truss in the floor below.
- The new vanity design included several features as well that the client
desired:
- The vanity is more uniform in space and function for two users. The old vanity had a tall and short vanity as well as a space for a stool that the clients hated and never used.
- The new cabinets had much more storage and the clients loved all the drawers, especially the one that had an outlet incorporated within it for their hairdryer – “how convenient!”
- Better sink locations allowed both clients to have an equal and adequate amount of “his and her“ counter space.
- The hot water recirculation pump allowed the clients to have almost instantaneous hot water at not only both vanities but also the shower.
- The added sconce lighting on the wall in front of both vanities gave the clients the desired lighting they needed to better see themselves in the mirrors. Before the remodeling project the clients only had recessed can lighting in the ceiling above that created very aggravating shadowing.
- To keep the budget in line with where the clients wanted it to be, the flooring, closet doors and water closet were not removed or remodeled. This made it a little more complicated when removing and installing cabinets as well as installing the new shower. The final result is beautiful leaving no indication that these items were not a part of the remodeling project.
- The “fit and finish” of all the tile work and cabinets was wonderful. The tile was straight, plum and level; all of the grout lines were consistent; the design was exactly what the client was looking for. The cabinets were balanced with all the reveals consistent and joints smooth.
- For the limited budget and not remodeling everything in this master bathroom it turned out “absolutely gorgeous!”
