Master Bathroom Remodel
This project was complete for a retired gentleman and his wife from New York City, who currently reside in Glendale, Arizona. The main design challenge of this remodel was to redesign the current master bath to accommodate his wife with her medical conditions. His wife has many medical challenges, not the least of which was her recent diagnosis with Parkinson’s disease.
Beautiful Interior Design with Accessibility In Mind
When the bathroom design process began, the wife’s mobility was limited to moving around with a walker. The decision was quickly made by the project consultant to design the master bath so that as her disease progresses, she will be able to easily use and navigate the new master bath. Thus, the new design of the bath was one that would allow for a wheelchair later on when needed.
The master bath was designed to accomplish the needs of the client which
included laying out the bathroom for easy access to a tub, shower, vanity,
storage, and the toilet. We also wanted to update the lighting and add an energy
efficient and secure operable window.
All of this needed to been done as soon as possible. The clients, their large
dog, and 4 cats remained living in the home and using the guest bathroom as the
master bath remodel was completed.
Design Needs and Considerations
To accomplish the needs expressed by the client the following was done:
- Universal design cabinetry was used for the vanity areas. The cabinets were done using Hickory wood to match the existing kitchen cabinets. His sink was in a sink base vanity cabinet, while her sink was suspended in the granite countertop between the pony wall and the drawer base vanity. The suspended sink would allow for use of her sink with a wheelchair later on when needed.
- A jetted walk-in tub was installed for safety and therapy. We selected a tub that came complete with everything we needed - faucet, hand held faucet, whirlpool jets, heater, seat, and grab bars. The window above the old tub was reduced in size and a new triple pane double locking window was installed. For safety and security, the window was tempered glass with a film that allowed light, but not sight, through the glass. The films rain pattern matched the pattern on the existing back door glass.
- A barrier-free roll-in shower was installed with a flip down seat. A heavy mold and mildew resistant accordion magnetized door was used and a second handle was added with a field modification for easier opening and closing. A shower tower was added in the shower which included a hand held shower and body jets. Grab bars were added for safety.
- The built-in linen closet that faced the toilet was removed and a linen cabinet that matched the vanities was added and turned to face the walkway for easier access.
- The wall of the lavatory closet was removed and a pony wall was built in its place. This allowed for easier and safer access to the toilet. Grab bars were also installed on each side of the toilet.
- A GFCI outlet was added specifically for an automatic cat watering unit.
- Granite countertops were installed and sealed to offer a beautiful appearance as well as easy maintenance and durability. Surface mounted mirrored medicine cabinets were added for style and function over each sink.
- Sconces with 300 Watts of lighting each were added over each sink. 6” recessed cans were added for additional lighting and safety.
- A porcelain floor was selected for beauty, durability, and maintenance and had a rougher finish for safety.
The project was completed expeditiously for the client and within their budget.
The client’s are thrilled with the new bathroom and the good news is that she is
actually currently getting better…she is now walking around without the walker.
She says that although she is moving around without a walker or chair, she is
using the massaging tub for therapy 20 minutes every day. She claims the therapy
is helping a lot and she now has the peace of mind, as does her husband, that
the bathroom is ready for when she needs it.
